The Swoon Quartet began in 2009 as a duet, with Kelly Krauter on the accordion and Gilles Roy on the guitar. From their Montreal, Quebec home, Krauter and Roy set out on a musical adventure to rediscover the musical heritage of Quebec and Europe, following three strands of popular song: la chanson québécoise, jazz manouche, and Mediterranean waltzes.
In 2013, Krauter and Roy teamed up with composer and multi-instrumentalist Ralph Denzer, to expand on their initial musical offering. Denzer’s flair for jazz and cabaret song, and extensive knowledge of traditional European, Sephardic and Roma repertoire, helped the combo find deeper roots in traditional popular repertoire. And a trumpet player!
In 2015, the trio becomes a quartet and takes to the local stage again, with the addition of fresh new talent: vocalist and violinist Maritza Grégoire. And so, the little Swoon that was of yesteryear becomes today’s happy band of swooneurs, with the addition of chanson française to the already extensive repertoire of musical gems.
